UAE’s First SAR Satellite Launched For Earth Observation

It was a historic day in space exploration for The UAE when it launched its first SAR (Synthentic Aperture Radar) satellite for earth observation.

Bayanat AI PLC (ADX: BAYANAT), a leading provider of AI-powered geospatial solutions, and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company PJSC (ADX: Yahsat), the UAE’s premier satellite solutions provider, have successfully launched the UAE’s first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite into orbit. This milestone, achieved on 16th August 2024, marks a significant advancement in the UAE’s Earth Observation capabilities, aligning with the strategic vision of Space42 and the nation’s broader space ambitions.

The Bayanat-owned SAR satellite, developed in collaboration with Yahsat and ICEYE, a global leader in SAR satellite operations, was launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 11 rideshare from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA. Managed by integrator Exolaunch, the satellite has successfully established communication, and initial operations are underway.

This launch is a pivotal moment for the UAE’s space sector, as it enhances the nation’s ability to conduct high-resolution, persistent monitoring of the Earth’s surface. SAR technology, unlike traditional optical satellites, can capture detailed images regardless of weather conditions or daylight, making it invaluable for a wide range of applications, including disaster management, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility.

The Earth Observation Space Program, a collaborative initiative by Bayanat and Yahsat, aims to develop a comprehensive SAR satellite constellation over the next three years. This initiative will position the UAE as a leader in the global SpaceTech industry, advancing the nation’s satellite manufacturing capabilities and supporting its National Space Strategy 2030.

Hasan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat, highlighted the significance of this launch, stating, “This is a triumphant moment for Bayanat and a defining step toward our future as Space42. The debut of our SAR satellite constellation will strengthen our position as a leader in AI-powered geospatial analytics, enabling informed decision-making on Earth.”

Ali Al Hashemi, Group CEO of Yahsat, echoed these sentiments, noting that the launch is a testament to the strong collaboration between Bayanat and Yahsat. He emphasized that the SAR satellite constellation will not only expand the UAE’s capabilities as a multi-orbit satellite operator but also reinforce its leadership in the space sector.

The ongoing partnership between Bayanat, Yahsat, and ICEYE continues to drive innovation in the UAE’s space sector. The Earth Observation Space Program, launched in 2023, aims to build national satellite remote sensing capabilities by establishing a constellation of LEO satellites. This strategic initiative will provide near real-time, high-definition geospatial insights, enhancing the UAE’s ability to monitor and manage on-the-ground conditions across the Middle East and beyond.
